RV maintenance is important for two reasons. First, it helps your RV to function as safely and effectively as possible, and second, it can help lengthen your RV’s effective lifespan, sometimes even by years. All of these benefits from just a few hours of work each month are a great deal, so to get you started here are five important RV maintenance tasks from Veurink’s RV Center.

1. Change the Fluids and Filters

Not all RVs have a drive train, but those that do have their own motor need regular oil changes and oil filter replacements. Check your manual to find out how frequently you need to change the oil, although every 3,000 miles is a good rule of thumb. While only campers with their own engines will need an oil change, both towable and non-towable RVs have fuel, coolant, and hydraulic systems with their own respective filters and fluids to change, so schedule a service appointment or learn how to do it yourself.

2. Clean and Repair the Roof

Your RV’s roof takes the brunt of most weather, making it one of the more vulnerable parts of the vehicle. Clean the roof every few months, and take the opportunity to examine all of the seams and seals once it has dried. It is far cheaper and easier to fix cracks and dried sealant than water damage, so fix any problems you find ASAP.

3. Check the Batteries and Generator

Inspect your battery before every trip. If you notice corrosion around the connections, clean them with a wire brush. Too much idle time is bad for a generator, so make sure to take it out and run it for 10-15 minutes every month, even when your rig is in storage. Follow all manufacturer recommendations concerning battery replacement and oil/filter replacement.

4. Inspect the Tires

An RV with worn or underinflated tires is more difficult to maneuver, so inspect your RV’s tires and check the air pressure before every trip. Luckily, your tires should come with a tread-wear indicator. Replace the tires when the tread falls below the low mark. If you notice uneven wearing, consider rotating the tires.

5. Maintain and Flush the Tanks

Don’t forget about your RV’s holding tanks. Take time to flush each of the tanks before storing your RV in order to deter bacteria buildup and unpleasant smells. Whenever your black tank becomes two-thirds full, it is time to empty and flush it.

Remember that the occasional light maintenance can go a long way to preventing major issues from forming in the first place.
